Save Pluto

Earlier this morning I got a news alert from the BBC. (How is it that the BBC always scoops the NYT online?) Pluto is being declared Planet non grata. What!?!? How can they do that?

I've always thought of Pluto as the North Dakota of our Solar System, mostly just a cold, icy place that's a long way from anywhere but worth keeping around in case you ever want to be alone. It is romantic in its' solitude.

Today is a sad day. We need to save Pluto.

  1. So are you starting some sort of grassroots campaign? Who do I call at NASA to stop this travesty?

  2. Save Pluto?!?

What about the sanctity of planethood?

Keeping Pluto a planet represents an attack on the foundation of planethood.

Pluto isn't really a planet, with it's deviant orbital lifestyle. Doesn't even stick to the same solar plane, does it?

Does it orbit it's moon or the other way around? Aren't they about the same size? What's with this planet-on-planet relationship, when tradition holds that we have planet-on-moon relationships.

Next thing you know asteroids and comets are going to want to be planets too.

Then what happens? The institution of planethood is eroded till it means nothing.

    Yuck!
